In this article, Aaron Lubeck, founder of Southern Urbanism Quarterly revisits Jane Jacobs's four critical ingredients for vibrant urbanism: density, varied buildings, mixed uses, and short blocks. Jane Jacobs, author of the 1961 book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, attacked the status quo of city planning and rebuilding. Now, sixty years later, Lubeck states "The good news is that these principles still apply. The bad news is that Southern cities are failing to fulfill all four."
